  • P3 Visit Wordsworth House

Tue 24 May 2022 Mrs Herbert

P3 enjoyed a day at William Wordsworth's house. We had tours of the kitchen and the bedroom and then free time to explore the rest of the house and the gardens. We learned lots about how William lived and life at the time.

  • Jewish Mezuzah making in Primary 2

    Sun 15 May 2022 Mrs B Fletcher

Primary 2 had a fun afternoon in RE on Friday designing and making their own Jewish mezuzahs. They chose from a selection of construction toys, paper and cardboard which they thought would be perfect, due to their shapes.

The discussions and interactions as they worked were a pleasure to listen to, proving to the adults how much they had learned and been listening carefully during previous lessons.

The finished results were fantastic and extremely inventive. Some children made tiny scrolls to place inside the cases and some children even had a go at some Hebrew writing on their scrolls. Lots of children also made a Star of David to attach to the front of the cases. ✡️

The children were very proud of their creations and the P2 staff thought they were pretty special too!

  • World Orienteering Day

Fri 13 May 2022 Mrs Harrington

This week we have been taking part in lots of activities to celebrate World Orienteering Day. The older children continued with their weekly orienteering session which, this week, took them to another beautiful location, Longlands Lake, Cleator Moor. A hidden gem of a location! Here at Bridekirk we encourage children to “have a go!” and try the sport of orienteering. With our local area having so much to offer - it'd be a shame not to explore in this way.

Younger children have been reading orienteering maps and finding hidden locations around the school. We hope that by encouraging our children at a young age to read maps and be active, they'll sign up for our orienteering inter-school activities as they move into KS2.

  • Primary 4 mental health awareness

Tue 10 May 2022 Mrs Stanley

In primary 4 we’ve been thinking about our mental health. In particular we focused on how our thoughts can lead to feelings which then affect our behaviour. We learned this is called the “cognitive triangle”. We made paper chains to reflect on times when negative thoughts had impacted on our behaviour and actions. We then thought about times when challenging negative thoughts and thinking more positively had led to a much better outcome 🙂

  • Mental Health Awareness Week at Bridekirk

Mon 09 May 2022 Mrs Smith

At Bridekirk Dovenby, we are thinking carefully about Mental Health Awareness week.  This morning, in assembly, Mrs Fish talked to us about all manner of activities that we could do to help ourselves if we feel worried or upset.

In Primary 1, we often listen to some mindfulness after lunch which helps us get ready for a busy afternoon learning.  We use this time to talk about any problems we may be having, or any feelings we might want to talk about.

  • Design & Technology Competition 2022

Fri 06 May 2022 Fiona Taylor

A team of four pupils from Year 6 attended a competition run by Cockermouth Rotary.

The pupils were given a kit containing all the pieces to make a type of catapult called a mangonel - sometimes referred to as a traction trebuchet which was used in Ancient China to throw stones.

They had to use a hammer to fit the wood together with dowels and work out top from bottom and left from right.

Our team did really well putting it together -  solid teamwork and their final constructed mangonel worked. Then disaster struck! A bit of over tightening and a dowel broke in the last 5 minutes. It was fudged with a screw but they weren’t able to tighten it as much. Out of the 8 teams, only 3 managed to build a working mangonel and our team came a very respectable third!

The children then used their completed mangonel to, in catapult style, fire some Play Dough across the school hall.

The play dough went 45 and 70cm.

Thank you to Cockermouth Rotary for organising this event and facilitating the opportunity to work alongside other local schools.

  • Derwent Hill 2022

Tue 03 May 2022 Mrs. Fish

After two years of lockdown and no residentials, our year 3 & 4 children went on an Adventure Day to Derwent Hill Outdoor Centre at Portinscale.

They took part in lots of challenging activities; canoeing, bush craft, a high rope adrenaline swing & and an obstacle rope course. As well as being incredibly polite and well mannered, the children showed determination, team work and resilience; I was incredibly proud of them all.

We can't wait to return to Derwent Hill for a full residential next summer.

  • Whole School African Drumming Workshop with Zozo!

Tue 03 May 2022 Mrs. Fish

On Friday Zozo arrived from London to join us at Bridekirk School. Each class enjoyed a lesson with him learning how to play Djembe Drums.

The children realised the importance of remembering a phrase in order to keep the beat and rhythm of the music. By the end of each session, by learning to count to the beat, the children were able to play a short piece of music; some of them sang along to their playing whilst Zozo danced! it was a very special day enjoyed by all.

  • Sensory Garden Pre-Work Saturday!

Tue 03 May 2022 Mrs. Fish

Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped clear the bike shelter and sheds to improve the space for our Sensory garden... it was a very productive Saturday morning!
