  • Sports Day 2021

    Tue 13 Jul 2021

Our annual sports day was a huge success. Red, green, yellow and blue team worked together in a variety of mixed and single races to see who this year’s sporting champions would be.

Traditional favourites: egg and spoon and sack racing were among the races this year. As well as marathon and teachers races. Thank you to all involved and a special well done to the Green Team for being the overall winners.

  • Cockermouth Rotary Writing Competition Winners

Mon 12 Jul 2021 Fiona Taylor

Staff and students at Bridekirk Dovenby School were delighted this week to find out that two of their pupils have been awarded prizes in the Cockermouth Rotary Club’s writing competition.

Phoebe Bell (Year 6) was the joint-winner overall across the seven schools that entered the competition for her enthralling account of delivering a lamb in Blindcrake.

“Phoebe’s story was full of suspense and made for a brilliant read,” said her teacher Mrs Fiona Taylor. “Her excellent variety of sentence-structure, spelling and grammar also made her story stand out.”

All Year 5 and 6 pupils across Cockermouth’s primary schools had been invited to enter the competition, writing a short piece entitled “My Happiest Day”. Bridekirk also enjoyed success in the Year 5 competition, with Keeva Postlethwaite coming in second place across the schools for her emotive tale about a trip up Scafell Pike with her family.

Isobel Johnson (Year 6) and Benjamin Wareing (Year 5) were both awarded second place in the Bridekirk Dovenby entries.

Despite Covid restrictions preventing a formal awards ceremony from the Rotary Club, students received certificates and prizes in school. Rotary Club Chair of Youth Services, Paul Lack, praised the quality of work this year from all students who entered the competition, saying that deciding the winners was a very difficult job indeed.

Here is an extract from Phoebe’s story detailing the moment she realized that she would have to deliver a lamb herself.

“The ewe delivered the first lamb; my heart was pounding with excitement but we quickly discovered, to our despair, that she wasn’t breathing.  Matty used all that we had learnt from his dad to resuscitate the lamb, but swiftly from the corner of my eye, I noticed the lamb was pushing again. It was twins!”

  • Special delivery for Primary 1 👸🏼

Mon 12 Jul 2021 Mrs Smith

We were all very excited in Primary 1 this morning to receive an important looking envelope delivered by Mrs Davidson. The anticipation was too much and we were all thrilled to read this letter from HRH The Queen’s, Lady in Waiting.
Maybe we might get an invitation to a royal garden party one day. 🤞🏼

  • Beautiful butterflies fly from P1

Thu 08 Jul 2021 Mrs Smith

Earlier this week, after lots of observing, the children in Primary 1 were ready to release their butterflies.  We chose the Orchard area as the best place to let them fly as there were lots of places for them to shelter and plants and flowers for them to feed on.

Everyone loved looking at the butterflies up close and watching them flutter off into the sunshine.🐛🦋

  • Activity Week - P2 Chalk Trails

    Wed 07 Jul 2021 Mrs B Fletcher

What fun we had during activity week planning our chalk trails, drawing them, testing them out and then explaining them to other children. Great team work P2! 😊

  • Activity Week Cress Heads in P1

    Wed 07 Jul 2021 Mrs B Fletcher

Primary 1 had fun during activity week designing faces for their cress heads and planting the seeds. After only a couple of days of sunshine and water, the cress started to grow. The children have now taken them home to carry on caring for them. I bet some of them are ready for a hair cut by now! 💇‍♀️💇🏼‍♂️
