  • An Egg-cellent time in Primary 1

Wed 30 Mar 2022 Mrs Smith

Our RE topic this term culminated in us designing and planting a beautiful Easter garden. Everyone was involved by collecting sticks, making crosses, gathering little stones and even filling the pot.  I think you will agree the children did a wonderful job.

Following on this today, we all had a fun filled afternoon taking part in an Easter Bingo afternoon, courtesy of FoBDS.  Here are a few pictures, but they really don’t show the amount if fun and excitement that filled our classroom (not just from the children!).

If you would still like to make a donation tow FoBDS, it is always gratefully received.

  • County Final Gymnasts

Tue 29 Mar 2022 Mrs Harrington

After successfully being awarded first place in the Allerdale Key Steps Gymnastics competition, our year 3 and 4 children took part in the county finals at Penrith Leisure Centre. We’re very proud of our gymnasts who were awarded fourth place in this county competition. As we move into next year,  we will continue to develop our gymnastics skills and, hopefully, we’ll have an opportunity to shine again.

Thank you to the children for their professionalism and to all staff involved.

  • Success in the National Cross Country Championships!

Mon 28 Mar 2022 Mrs. Fish

Congratulations to Toby Kitchin who came 14th (out of 140) and first Cumbrian home in the XC championships at the weekend.

Toby has run his first 3 cross country races this season:

    1st -county champs

    5th - schools county champs

    14th - schools nationals

    Nationals:

Toby set off at a steady pace quietly and confidently working his way through from the middle of the pack and finished really strongly with a sprint. I am sure this will be the start of a very positive future in running and we look forward to watching the progress he makes!

  • One Day Creative - Romeo and Juliet Workshop

Sun 20 Mar 2022 Fiona Taylor

The pupils in Primary 5 have been studying Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare earlier this term and, to further develop their understanding of the play, they took part in a workshop run by One Day Creative.

Matt was the leader of the day and he led the children on a journey through a world filled with love, friendship, loyalty and the bitter sting of betrayal. Along the way, they investigated key themes, tumultuous relationships and the narrative structure. The children had opportunities to include some of the original text from the play and some certainly had the the gift of the Shakespearean gab!

The children were impressive at remembering the main events of the plot (and the tricky names of the characters), also using their drama skills that they had practised preparing for the Christmas show at the local theatre.

Well done to everybody and thank-you to 'One Day Creative' for supporting our learning and creating memories of a thoroughly enjoyable day.

  • Learning more about Judaism

    Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mrs B Fletcher

Y1 and Y2 have been really looking forward to meeting Sheila Gewolb, who was coming in to teach them more about Judaism. They were so excited to meet her today and extremely keen to ask her lots of questions. Sheila was very impressed with their knowledge of the religion and the range of questions that they posed. The children were very lucky to learn even more from Sheila, who brought in an array of artefacts and resources to show them.

Sheila set up a table ready for Shabbat, lit the candles and said the special Shabbat prayer. She also showed the children some items of clothing, which some children enjoyed modelling for us! Other things we enjoyed looking at were the special plates for the seder meal, the mezuzah and examples of Hebrew writing which is read from right to left.

Sheila has left some challah bread for the children to try tomorrow and they're all excited to sample it. What a fun afternoon we had and we're already looking forward to Sheila's next visit later on in the school year.

  • Local Area Geography

Sat 12 Mar 2022 Fiona Taylor

Pupils in Primary 5 are learning about geographical features of their local area so this week they used a map to navigate their way round Cockermouth and at various stages of the walk, they collected some data so they could increase the evidence for their hypotheses that had been discussed prior to the walk. In addition, they looked at the features of the housing and, using information in their guide, they identified when the houses had been built. Also, there were some interesting things to look for using photographs as clues. They saw buildings connected to William Wordsworth, Fletcher Christian, John Dalton and we even saw the house that was lived in by Chris Bonington. Mr Chippendale told us about the history of The Toyshop on Main Street. The town trail ended at the Memorial Gardens with an explore of the play area!

Tue 08 Mar 2022 Mrs. Fish

Thank you to everyone who has sent in items for our Ukraine appeal. The van was loaded up, by the school council, and Mr. Long delivered the items to the collection point. A final load will be taken on Friday.

  • Photographs taken at World Book Day 2022

Fri 04 Mar 2022 Fiona Taylor

It was a great day for taking photographs of all the fab costumes that were worn on World Book Day 2022.

  • World Book Day 2022 - 25 Year Celebration

Fri 04 Mar 2022 Fiona Taylor

The year 2022 marks the celebration of 25 years of World Book Day and the children (and adults) had a day of ‘book related’ activities to promote reading for pleasure.

On Monday, some of the KS2 classes watched ‘Live from the Cambridge Theatre’ where they heard from many of the popular authors about their journey into story writing. On 3rd March, everybody dressed up as their favourite book character and we held a ‘character parade’ with the school council members judging the different costumes. Following that, the older children in school read their favourite book to the younger children. Quizzes, competitions and treasure hunts were a few of the examples of the activities the children had opportunities to be involved in during the day.

  • A visit from Mrs Hill

Tue 01 Mar 2022 Mrs Smith

Reception children were excited this morning to welcome their Governor Class Buddy, Mrs Hill.  The children chatted happily about what they have been learning and experiencing since our last catch up just before Christmas.

Mrs Hill was very impressed to hear all about our visit to the dentist, learning all about our writing and how we know what we need to do to make progress, and even the willow weaving in our new sensory garden.
At the end of our chat, Mrs Hill, gave us two lovely books!  We shared ‘Mog, the forgetful cat’ together and will be using ‘The Easter Story’ in our RE lessons really soon.

We are really looking forward to hearing from our other buddy, Mrs Matthews, soon.
