  • Reading Awards December 2023

    Tue 19 Dec 2023

At Bridekirk Dovenby School reading is prioritised and the staff work tirelessly to ensure as many pupils read for pleasure as much as possible. There are a variety of different ways teachers do this. Class readers are carefully chosen to inspire children to read sequels, book corners are attractive and promote feature authors, Spellbinding competition attracts groups of children as they strive for the passport and children can earn points in Accelerated Reader. A more recent initiative is the weekly delivery of First News to satisfy the needs of children who like to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in the real world! Teachers read children’s fiction so they can make recommendations. What next?

  • A Little Princess

Fri 15 Dec 2023 Fiona Taylor

Children in KS2 enjoyed a trip  to the Theatre by the Lake, in Keswick, to watch A Little Princess.

Sara Crewe travelled from the freedom of a childhood in India to a boarding school in a cold dark corner of northern England. Just as she began to build a brighter world for herself and her friends some devastating news arrived from home and her life took a terrible turn.

Meanwhile, our storyteller, Ramdas, was on his way from faraway Shimla with a twist in the tale that changed everything. He searched for  the girl with a strong heart and a head full of wild imaginings before it was too late. It was great to see a couple of parts in the play being played by ex pupils from our school

  • Fantastic Performance

Sat 09 Dec 2023 Fiona Taylor

All the children in Year 4,5 and 6 put on an amazing performance of Rock Bottom at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington. Martha, James and Blair played the parts of the Cobblestones, just an ordinary Stone Age family of cave folk living on Stoney Street, Rock Bottom! Bobby Cobblestone hatched his very first good idea; he was whisked off to work for none other than the beautiful celebrity Lady Lava - played by Amelia.  Unfortunately, BC was soon up to his neanderthal neck in trouble when he discovered his new boss was hiding  a dark secret. With mysterious monsters terrorising the town and a volatile volcano ready to blow its top, five Juan’s trying to sell rocks to caveys - what could go wrong?

Sun 03 Dec 2023 Mrs Fish

On Friday, the choir were invited to sing to the elderly as they finished their Christmas dinner and celebrations at Gilcrux Village Hall. The children retold the Nativity Story in song and verse and finished with some old-time favourites that everyone could sing-along to. • Young leaders club

Fri 24 Nov 2023 Mrs Stanley

In assembly today our young leaders received their award certificates and badges. They have worked really hard over the past 8 weeks in an after school club. They've had lots of fun and been learning all about what it means to be the change you want to see in the world. The bake sale they organised to fundraise for Oaktree animal rescue was a huge success and they should feel really proud of their achievements.

  • Film-maker and Writer Visits School

Sat 18 Nov 2023 Fiona Taylor

Matt Dickinson is an adventurer, expedition film maker and author. He thrilled the children in Primary 4 and 5 with stories of his experiences climbing Mount Everest. Based on his experiences, Matt has written a couple of series of books. Many funny stories were told and the children didn’t know which ones to believe! Certainly taking 250 Toffee Crisps on an expedition which led to them exploding at high altitude made us all laugh when his mates thought it was an avalanche. We all know the meaning of ‘gullible’ now 😂 He told them about the importance of reading and after his talk, many of the children bought signed copies of his books. Primary 4 attended a writing workshop led by Matt and Primary 5 all wrote him a thank you letter.

Thank you Matt for an entertaining morning.

  • Isla Ward (Champion Alpine Skier) comes to Visit Bridekirk!

Thu 16 Nov 2023 Mrs Fish

On Tuesday, Isla Ward came to school to talk to the children about her experience as a downhill skier. The children were given the opportunity to ask lots of questions in order to find out more about her sporting life. Following this, each class took part in a gym challenge as part of a sponsored event to help raise funds for both the athletes and our school. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this.

Below is some of the information Isla passed on to the children.

    How I Started

I started Skiing on family holidays around the age of three, but I began racing on the dry ski slope in Glasgow, we then transitioned to racing on slopes abroad in the English Championships in Italy, which is England, Wales and Scotland competing against each other for the British title.

    My Greatest Achievement

My most outstanding achievement is winning the NJR which is the National Junior Race, this was being held in Bielmonte. This was my first win under the International Skiing Federation. This is where the senior bracket of the sport begins as you start competing against long-time pros and world cup athletes. The race is structured with two runs, whoever places the fastest time within the first run starts last in the second run, and this was the first time I had been able to retain my position in first after placing there in the first run. This is a massive disadvantage as the track is more weathered meaning it is bumpier and the surface is generally harder to ski on. I remember feeling relieved after being able to hold the position but also joyful as I had also won my first international race!

    My Greatest Challenge

The greatest challenge I have faced is recovering from a concussion I suffered in a Giant Slalom in which I went off-piste, through the netting and crashed into the snow. It was a fairly big crash, but I was lucky to have come out with only a concussion, however, this lead to a post-concussion syndrome which caused me to have dizzy spells and nausea at any point in the day. I recovered from this concussion and came back to race but something was off as I was struck with the same dizzy feeling and nausea. I was then advised to stop skiing and restart the healing process as I would normally if I were to have been concussed again.

    My Hobbies

My hobbies are unicycling and juggling, I began juggling because a balancing coordination coach had mentioned that juggling can calm nerves and create a focused environment, so I then began juggling before each race! My favourite meals are usually a chicken stir fry and fruit smoothies paired with protein powder etc. after a session I usually like to make a peanut butter and banana smoothie after training as it offers good proteins and fats.

    My Future goals

My future aspirations are to reach and medal in the World Cup and Olympics.

  • Get Wired - Get Coding

Mon 13 Nov 2023 Fiona Taylor

The children in year 5 and year 6 had an exciting day in school participating in a workshop delivered by five representatives from Sellafield.

The session started with an introduction to electrical circuits and the vocabulary ‘connected’ to the topic! The children then worked in small groups to build a lie detector, a working FM radio and they also experimented to design circuits using their own ideas.

The second part of the workshop was working with Botley 2.0 - the coding robot. Again they had a variety of challenges to complete by following the coding cards. The children had to think critically along the way to solve problems they encountered. It was a fun day🤣
