Diwali - Hindu Visitor

This week in RE, P5 received a visit from a Hindu speaker who talked to the class about Diwali.

Rashmi talked about 'The Festival of Lights' and explained how it is celebrated. She also reminded us about some of the different Hindu gods and how they fit in to the celebrations.

The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. It is celebrated by Hindu people across the world.

Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called 'diyas'.

Diwali is also celebrated in Sikhism and Jainism.

Below you can see some objects shown to us that are used during the celebrations.

We enjoyed learning about a different festival and comparing the similarities and differences with Christian celebrations throughout the year.

Rashmi enjoyed her afternoon at Bridekirk and we enjoyed listening and asking her questions.
