Our Early Years and Key Stage One children have been learning about coasts and the seaside as part of their recent topic work. We're so fortunate to have both of these on our doorstep, so on Thursday 6th June we set off on a bus to Maryport to find out more.
Our first stop was the Aquarium and everyone was excited to explore inside. There was so much to see and so much to learn. Ben (our guide) showed us lots of interesting sea creatures and also taught us lots of amazing facts. Did you know that if a star fish loses an arm it will grow another one?! We also found out that the jelly fish need to be placed inside a circular tank because if they were in a square tank they would get stuck in the corners. Apparently they prefer to move in a circular motion.
After all of that learning at the Aquarium it was time to explore somewhere else. The Reception children enjoyed a walk around the harbour to look at the boats. The Y1 and Y2 children walked over to the Life Boat Station to find out more about the job of the volunteers who work there. They enjoyed seeing the huge lifeboat and the large vehicle that takes it to the water. Some children got to model pieces of the special uniform and we all discovered the importance of each piece.
Throughout the day there was a great deal to learn and the children were constantly asking questions to find out more. They impressed us all with their inquisitiveness, as well as their answers to questions posed by various adults.
The sun was shining, so we ended our trip with a play on the park before heading back to school. What a fabulous day we had!
