On Friday, each class walked to church and back to spend an hour exploring different stations set up in the church. Parents were also invited to join their children and siblings came along too.
Each station taught the children what Christians believe happened to Jesus following his resurrection: Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday & Ordinary Time. The children discovered the significance of each and the liturgical colours that represent each.
Members of St Bridget's Church set up the stations and enabled the learning to take place - we wish to thank them for all the hard work which went in to making it a very special day.
They also provided refreshments for parents and children at the end of the experience which kept us all going and fuelled children for their walk home!!!
Year 2 enjoyed 2 days of outdoor activities at Hawse End. Activities on the first day included canoeing across Derwentwater to St Bridget’s island where the children enjoyed following a treasure map to find the hidden treasure. The weather was glorious, allowing us to enjoy jumping in the water on the way back. On Day two the children challenged themselves to rock climbing. Everyone had an amazing time, enjoying their first residential at Bridekirk Dovenby School.
We celebrated our reading achievements over the spring term. Lots of words were read and some children received certificates for most improved reader.
Year 3 and 4 enjoyed three days of outdoor activities at Derwent Hill near Keswick. They challenged themselves to climb the mighty Gladiator and scramble up a waterfall! They had the opportunity to jump out of a tree on the big swing and some of them visited a lead mine. Others visited Bowder Stone and they all enjoyed a beautiful walk up Latrigg. They all came home thoroughly exhausted but very proud of their achievements.
We would like to thank Cockermouth School and The Primary Business Partnership for inviting the 'Year Five' children to take part in this special day.
The children were shown around the various arts departments within the school and took part in a variety of workshops; Art & Design, Music and Drama... The pictures below are some snapshots of their engagement.
Following a packed lunch in the canteen, the children went to the Eco-Centre for a careers afternoon. Yr5 were exposed to a range of different professions so that as they progress through school they are gradually made aware of the opportunities that might be available for them both in the local area and further afield.
The next 'Year Five Day' will be science based! We can't wait...
Well done Freddie!
Last month, pupils in P5 entered a young writer’s competition organised by Keswick Theatre - Words by the Water. The task was to write a short story (300 words) with the title: On Your Doorstep.
All the pieces of writing were worthy of winning a prize but Freddie’s writing was shortlisted to be a finalist. This meant, that last Saturday, we were invited to Keswick Theatre and Freddie’s story was read out by the president of the festival because it was judged to be the very best piece of writing by her. It was great to hear all the features that she considered made his writing a winning piece. The prizes were handed out by Tom Palmer the writer of many popular books.
A group of children have received their Young Leaders award. The children have taken part in activities to support the community and the school. The award also teaches children how to face challenges with a positive attitude. Well done to all the children who achieved this award.
As we wind down ready for the weekend, the ski trip fun continues with a final push until their return on Sunday. Last night, DJ Lomas shared some tunes which were enjoyed by all. Mrs Fish reports that their skiing ability is astounding and this year, we have some tremendous athletes.
We look forward to seeing them on Monday. They’ll be exhausted!
Sunny and clear weather today. All the children are having a great time. Many have used a chairlift for the first time. We are going bum-boarding later and having hot chocolate this evening.
Some of our year 5 and 6 children have gone skiing this week! We can’t wait to see all the photographs and we hope they have lots of fun!
