Today the children visited church four their RE lesson. They stood in the sanctuary around the alter and lit the two candles.
Reverend Brentnall explained why people partake in Holy Communion - a service of thanks and forgiveness.
The children tried some wafers (bread) which represents the body of Christ and took a sip of blackcurrant (wine) which represents the blood of Christ.
There was some time for questions and the children made links to The Passover and The Last Supper.
Today, Zozo joined us to help support the teaching of Djembe drumming to P5. As he’d travelled such a long way to be with us, he also offered some story telling to the reception children as well as a lesson to P4.
Zozo taught beat and rhythm and showed the children how to play high and low sounds on a drum. The children danced and sang some Zulu songs. There are some videos on the music section of the website and some wonderful pictures below. The children really enjoyed their afternoon!
On Wednesday 15th January we had a visit from “Robo Dog”. Mrs Lester from Crea-Tech kindly brought in this wonderful robot. The children had great fun discovering how “Robo Dog” moved and could be used. We found out in the industrial world the robotic dog performs inspections and gathers data at construction/manufacturing sites and nuclear plants such as Sellafield. It was amazing to see how the sensors enabled the Robo Dog to move around anything within its reach. Will we see some of our students pursuing a career within this kind of profession in the future?
Markus Campbell-Savours, our local MP, visited us this week to answer some of our questions we had prepared for him to answer. We really enjoyed his visit and thank him for his time spent informing us all about his job and the changes he is making to our community.
Some questions we asked him were:
What inspired you to become an MP?
What significant memories do you have from your childhood?
How long have you wanted to become an MP?
What would you like to be if you were not an MP?
What is the main thing you want to change at the moment?
… and many more great questions.
The children in years 4,5 & 6 performed ‘The Pirates of the Currybean’ to a packed theatre at the Carnegie in Workington. The audience were amazed at the standard of acting, singing and dancing. Harriet, Felix and Blake sang their solos with confidence and Freddie & Barney made the audience laugh as they played the comedy duo - Slack and Scuttle. The pirates, led by Blake and Ruth (supported by the cheeky parrot, Harry) conveyed their characters with conviction and the sailors, led by Felix and Cameron, delivered their jokes in style! Supported by some village sellers, the islanders of Lumbago and a team of pesky rats, the cast showed their friends and families the high standards reached in everything we do.
Early Years, Years 1 and 2 acted their hearts out alongside an outstanding performance by the Year 3 choir at St Bridget's church last week.
Our production of 'Don't Be Afraid' was a hit with both audiences on Wednesday morning and evening. The story of the nativity was given a twist by the main characters of 'Fear', 'Doubt' and 'Panic' who were just not sure that the story would unfold the way it should. In the end, we were reminded by some shepherds, animals, kings and of course the angels, that 'God is with us'.
Everyone is so proud of you all - you were amazing!
On Monday and Friday this week, the choir children were invited to sing for two different groups of elderly people. The first, a friendship group at St Bridget's Church who were holding their Christmas celebrations in the church rooms. The second was a Christmas Dinner celebration in Gilcrux Village Hall and we accompanied the coffee!!
At both events, the children entertained the elderly with a narration of the nativity interspersed with appropriate songs. I think the children's favourite songs were Little Donkey, We Three Kings and Come and Join the Celebration!
At the end we all joined in together with three Jolly Christmas numbers which everyone sang with great gusto!
During this term, the pupils in Primary 5 have been enriching their science knowledge with a visit to a science show and a visitor coming to school to deliver a workshop called Switched On.
Simon Watt from ‘Science Made Simple’ presented the show and the children deepened their understanding of the solar system through demonstrations which were fun.
Switched On was a morning of hands-on, engaging activities enriched with real-world examples, emphasising safety protocols and science principles all around the topic of electricity. The children enjoyed constructing circuits and testing them so they could answer questions. They were shown how to draw a circuit diagram.
Pupils in P5 have been very keen to lead clubs in school this year. A group of children in year 6 have organised a dance club for pupils in KS1 to attend. They have organised warm-up activities, dances and plan to put on a show for the rest of the school after Christmas.
In addition, a group of children in year 5 have set up a ‘library’ club. Again they have invited the younger children to attend. It’s great to watch them creating rotas, managing a register and engaging a group in a story. Listening to them questioning the children makes me think we have a group of teachers in the making.
A cricket club has also started - watch this space for the future Ben Stokes to take to the pitch!
We held a 2 minute silence to remember all those who have lost their lives in conflict. We read a story about the poppies.
