On Monday 17th June, year 3 and 4 went back in time to learn all about the Victorian period and life in the first half of the 20th century.
We visited the pit village and learned all about the coal industry. Then we went back to school! We did a Victorian lesson where we did our ‘3 Rs’ and wrote with a quill and ink. We experienced what school life was like for a child in Victorian times. After this we went to the fair and we enjoyed a ride on the carousel.Next we went to the town. We visited the dentist where they thought brushing your teeth with sugar was a good idea! Speaking of sugar, we also went to the sweet shop and purchased some traditional sweets that were weighed out in front of us. We then enjoyed the 1950s town where we recognised more familiar objects. A tram ride finished our amazing trip.

  • The York Residential for Yr. 5 & 6

Sun 16 Jun 2024 Mrs Fish

On Wednesday 12th June, year 5 and 6 visited York for their residential... The trip was designed to cover aspects of History previously taught as well as expose children to the cultural diversity of a city.

Over the three days, the children visited Eden Camp to find out more about the wars, they listened to tales of ghosts past as we walked through the cobbled city streets on our first evening.

Headley House Hotel was the perfect base and the following morning we walked to the Railway Museum, York Minster and then Jorvik and The Dig... Evening entertainment on day two was posh clothes and a game of bowling together.

The final morning was a celebration of the cocoa bean.... chocolate!

We took a trip to South America and discovered the journey of chocolate to the shores of England and eventually York! Being surrounded by chocolate all morning was tempting on the taste buds, but we did get to try the chocolate in its varying forms!

We ate our dinner to the sounds of a Spaniard playing his guitar and singing - some of us even attempted a dance!

What a fabulous trip this was and hopefully one that will be remembered for a while!

  • Making the most of a trip to the coast!

    Tue 11 Jun 2024 Mrs B Fletcher

Our Early Years and Key Stage One children have been learning about coasts and the seaside as part of their recent topic work. We're so fortunate to have both of these on our doorstep, so on Thursday 6th June we set off on a bus to Maryport to find out more.

Our first stop was the Aquarium and everyone was excited to explore inside. There was so much to see and so much to learn. Ben (our guide) showed us lots of interesting sea creatures and also taught us lots of amazing facts. Did you know that if a star fish loses an arm it will grow another one?! We also found out that the jelly fish need to be placed inside a circular tank because if they were in a square tank they would get stuck in the corners. Apparently they prefer to move in a circular motion.

After all of that learning at the Aquarium it was time to explore somewhere else. The Reception children enjoyed a walk around the harbour to look at the boats. The Y1 and Y2 children walked over to the Life Boat Station to find out more about the job of the volunteers who work there. They enjoyed seeing the huge lifeboat and the large vehicle that takes it to the water. Some children got to model pieces of the special uniform and we all discovered the importance of each piece.

Throughout the day there was a great deal to learn and the children were constantly asking questions to find out more. They impressed us all with their inquisitiveness, as well as their answers to questions posed by various adults.

The sun was shining, so we ended our trip with a play on the park before heading back to school. What a fabulous day we had!

  • Fun Run at MSport for our Library!!!

Sat 25 May 2024 Mrs Fish

Yesterday, the whole school walked down to M-Sport to use their track for a sponsored run. This event was to raise money for our new school library!
The children were AMAZING and worked together to complete as many laps as possible; each lap was 1.5km in length. The children (and staff) ran for one hour and impressed me with their sense of fun, motivation and resilience even in the wet! 💦

Hopefully, we will raise enough money to refurbish our computer suite and convert it into a library.

'Well Done', everyone and a big thank you to FOBDS for their help and to M-Sport for allowing us to use the track.

  • Spiritual Development

Sat 25 May 2024 Mrs Fish

On Tuesday, Paul Rose came to school to support children and staff with spiritual development.
P2 and P4 spent time in the sensory garden using their senses to connect with nature. The children and staff were challenged to take time to stop, use their senses and really notice all that is going on in our immediate environment.
Teachers are planning to make time to Connect, Reflect and Act in order to promote awe and wonder.

  • United Kingdom Mathematics Trust 2024 Challenge

Sun 12 May 2024 Fiona Taylor

Last month, some children from year 6 entered the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge. They commented that some of the questions were quite tricky but they worked through each and every one of them in the hour allocated to complete 25 questions.

We were all pleased when we found out that we had been awarded: three silver certificates, four bronze certificates and three participation awards.

Well done to everyone who took part.

The first event of the league took place at Richmond hill school on Wednesday and 24 pupils took part. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon including the year 5 children who have never orienteered before.

We had some amazingly fast times and look forward to seeing how the children performed overall.

A huge well done to everyone for having a go and taking part in this fun event - what beautiful weather to get us started!

  • Year 5 Science Day at Cockermouth School

Sun 28 Apr 2024 Mrs Fish

Year Five visited Cockermouth School for a Harry Potter themed science afternoon!

During the first activity they helped Norbert the dragon digest his food... coco-pops and banana! YUK...

They then moved on to a Potions Class and identified the spells by the colour of the bunsen burner flame.

Finally, they had to take the temperature of their wand in a rage of Harry Potter settings to locate the Philosopher's Stone!

Have a look at the pictures - what a great

    afternoon!
